What Is A Bluff Anyway?

The structure of poker gives a space for the execution of certain strategies. Because each player can only guess what other players are holding, there is room for deception and deceptive strategies. One of them is bluffing.

Let's take a closer look at the dynamics of poker: Players are dealt face-down cards which only they could see, and bet according to the strength of their hand. But it might be better if we rephrase that: players bet according to the strength of the hand they want to evoke.

This means that a player's bet is one of the windows towards the strength of their hand. This also means that a player with a weak hand could easily deceive other players into thinking that they have a strong hand, simply by betting largely. And this is what we call bluffing.

Bluffing is betting aggressively despite a weak or inferior hand. Other players rely on your betting behavior to deduce what hands you are holding. Thus, by betting aggressively, you could fool them into thinking that they are going up against a superior hand.

The aim of this poker strategy is to make other players fold. And only by doing so is a bluff successful. Because the bluffing hand is inferior, you could not risk going into a showdown.

The principle behind the bluff is simple: because you have a miniscule chance of being dealt a good or superb hand each time, then you must have the option to win even with a weak hand.

However, this valuable poker strategy is not at all that easy. It is not as simple as putting all of your chips in danger with weak cards in hand. You need to have the optimal conditions for bluffing: there must be only a few players remaining in hand, no calling stations, no aggressive players, and you should have a great table image.

Seems to be a bit burdensome, right? But so is folding and giving up your bet hand after hand. You must have the right mixture of bluffing and playing your bluffs right in order to be successful in a game of poker.

Bluffing is one poker strategy that makes the game fun. Because of the structure of poker, one could deceive other players into thinking that you hold a superb hand when in fact you have a weak one. Know when and how to bluff, and you will be on the way to stealing that pot!
